"Then and now, a human interest article about your development and it's surroundings” contains this information about Country Club Estates.

"The land on which this development is built was formerly owned by Mr. Robert E. Whipp, who lived here in the big white house and operated a flying school in Dundalk. Hating to drive through the city traffic, he kept a light plane here and flew to his school.   In 1940 Mr. Whipp made over his estate into an airport and flying school with 27 planes, six instructors and 6 mechanics.  Approximately 60 privately owned planes were based here.  There were also accommodations for seaplanes.  The hangers were located near the recreation area and the main runway was parallel to what is now called Country Club Drive.

"Marley Creek... was at one time used by one of the local lumber companies.  They floated their lumber from Virginia on as many as five schooners at a time.
THE PRESIDENT'S CORNER

1966 marks the tenth anniversary of CCERA.  This in itself has little significance, but the accomplishments and asset growth of CCERA within this ten-year period are significant.   These things did not just happen.   They occurred because you the membership made them happen.  You provided the leadership and the manpower and the necessary capital to improvement any and all projects.  Nothing but praise can be heaped upon you, for your area has grown from a basic pool and nothing much else to an area that all of us can be proud of.   However because we have made such gigantic strides in the first ten years is no reason to become complacent.  Your continuing support is always necessary, for without it there is no association.
Since we are discussing the tenth anniversary of CCERA and the growth and improvements made it would seem that the best way to commemorate this event would be to have growth in membership.  This should not be too difficult, if all who are members would take the responsibility of asking the residents of CCE who are not members to join.  You are not trying to sell them a "pig in a poke", you are selling them an "honest to goodness" product, one that will return, through recreation, much more than they will invest.  Presently, slightly over 50% of the residents of CCE are members of our association.  This should give us a wide field in which to obtain additional members. This effort not only helps the association, but you the individual members because additional members wouldn't necessarily increase the over-all cost of operation, so if you have more contributing to nearly the same expenditures it is conceivable that it could be of some important concerning future dues.
Mrs. Shirley Mooney is the membership coordinator, but it is humanly impossible for her to contact everyone in CCE who is not a member.  Let's all of us give her a "hand" and see if we can increase our membership appreciably and make this a memorable TENTH ANNIVERSARY.

* 1959 A basket ball program was started by Mr. Thorton.  They practiced in the gym of Marley Jr. High.
*January 1970's board meeting was held at the Carling Brewery.  The board members were treated to a tour of the facility.
* 1971 CCERA hall was built.  One of the building plans submitted was a log cabin structure.
* In the 1960's it was tradition for CCERA to host a tree burning on the 12th day after Christmas.  The neighborhood would roast hot dogs,  and drink lots of hot chocolate.

Then and Now
By Mary Ann Boland
The Country Clubber
April 1966

This was the first edition of the paper and was done by a publicity committee headed by Mrs. Louise Pinschmidt.  At that time there were 195 Residents here, with 170 later becoming charter members of the CCERA....

"The Board of Directors are drawing up a master plan for the undeveloped area around the swimming pool.  The purposed layout includes club house, play ground, wading pool, tennis courts, archery range and boat docks."

From the May 1961 Edition...
Phase I of the Master Plan completed and the following are excerpts from the report written by it's chairman, Lt. Comdr. Paul Marr:
"The first big item, and one of the most expensive, was the reshaping of the entire area with a bulldozer and grader.  The two reasons this was a 'must' were for soil conservation and to give us more room."

"Several hundred square feet of usable land was gained by moving the boat dock road over to the edge of the property and flattening and terracing the entire area."

"Over 500 trees and shrubs have been plantd and over 80% of those were at no cost to CCERA; in other words for free.  It took a little persuading of the Government Reforestation Agency; however,  we do have a soil conservation problem and those were the words most utilized and stressed in the persuading.

"On a Saturday and Sunday we Jettisoned 72 piles (Telephone poles) into the sand and backed them up with the largest and heaviest railroad ties I have ever lifted.  The telephone  poles were free,  the ties were friee and the sea wall that I committed myself to build at the last general meeting, is completed."
In 1970 the Country Club Estates Girls Softball league was formed
In 1971 there was a weekly "Boys Night Out" poker game and a weekly Bingo game in the hall.
Until 1971 the Anne Arundel County Parks and Recreation sponsered a "summer playground"  in the hall.
This is an article written in the February 1971 clubber.

ECOLOGY- ?

In all of our concern with ecology wildlife, and natural resourses, no one has mentioned some of the greatest menaces to the natural environment of mankind.

With our advanced technology and itellectual wisdom,  why can't we find a way to accomlish a systematic extinction of some of our animals - such as Beatles, Monkees, and Bee Gees.

And  what about the belching from the Grand Funk Railroad, and the ear-splitting roar of Led Zepplin, or the metalic rattle of the Iron Butterfly?   Can't we  restrict these modes of mass transit trips to a single route to Chicago - via Clearwater, Union Gap, and Joplin?

As Righteous Brothers must we give our Blood, Sweat & Tears in order to protect and retain the natural beauty wonders of out enviroment - from our Birds, such as the Partridge Family, as well as our weather - The four Seasons - are being threatened.  And every day we read of huge coastal   slides in which Rolling Stones are inundating the Beach Boys.

Awake America!  The Cowsills are contaminating our foods, Vanilla Fudge & Cream is even now in question.

Must we place Temptations under our human Creedence?  So we expect the answer to be the Miracles of a new world - a new Fifth Dimension? Fortunately some are saying No!  Groups are now being formed in order to fight this Sly menance.  For example:  The recent combined Associations of  Young Rascals and Herman's Hermits.

And - The Doors are always open!
